RUSE Ensemble Orchestra is comprised of a core of the best jazz musician from San Diego / Tijuana region. This is the forum where they push the local envelope of music not available in the commercial club scene. Four public performances are presented each year in addition to live feeds on KSDS Jazz radio.

Conductor and composer Turiya Mareya performs on Bass Clarinet and piano. The orchestra also features Nathan Mills on trumpet and Flugel Horn, Mark Vanderpoel on Bass, David Millard on reeds and cello, Robert Felcher on congas, Zopilote on Alto Clarinet , Valerie McPartland on vocals and Carlos Rull on drums.

Turiya Mareya is one of the most innovative and underrated artists in Southern California. Not only does she play the notoriously difficult and haunting Bass Clarinet (originally introduced to Jazz by Eric Dolphy) she also leads her own ensemble playing her original music which spans funk, Latin, Traditional and Avant Garde Jazz . A critically acclaimed composer her 25 year career in music has taken her from San Francisco to New York City to Vera Cruz Mexico. She has devoted her life to speaking out for the rights of women, minorities , Gays and Lesbians. She credits her survival as a woman Jazz artist to her mentor, legendary Jazz artist Daniel Jackson.



Nathan Mills (Trumpet and Flugel Horn) - Performed with San Diego Band Rollo. He Also led his own group Jazooty and was part of the Jazz Composers Workshop.

Mark Vanderpoel (Bass) - Graduate of San Diego's School of performing arts. Currently a student at UCSD studying Bass with Bertram Turetsky and Jazz with Jimmie Cheatham.

David Millard (Reeds and cello) - Featured soloist with the Taumbu Latin Jazz ensemble. Currently performing in San Diego with the Hymie Moran Quartet.

Zopilote (Alto Clarinet) - Soloist with Immediate Freedom Latin Jazz ensemble, Performed with Arturo Cipriano, Soundart. Currently performing with The Taco Shop Poets and Mantekozo.

Robert Felcher (Congas) - Originally from New York. Studied with Luis Conti and in Cuba. Currently with Latin Soul.

Carlos Rull (Drums and percussion) - Performs with Jazzooty, Latin Soul.
